西北大学肇始于1902年的陕西大学堂，1912年始称西北大学，1923年8月改称国立西北大学。1937年抗战爆发后，国立北平大学、国立北平师范大学、国立北洋工学院等内迁来陕，组成国立西安临时大学，1938年更名为国立西北联合大学，1939年8月复称国立西北大学。

陕西师范大学新闻出版社研究所是陕西师范大学1997年6月批准建立的一个跨学科的学术研究机构。它适应我国信息时代新闻出版事业空前活跃的现状，根据我校拥有齐全的书、报、刊出版单位、百余名编辑人员、以及新闻学传播学院电教影视中心新闻专业的实际情况，由学报编辑部、杂志社、出版社、中文系、电教影视中心等单位联袂组建。该所现设有传播理 论学、编辑出版学、媒介文化、广播电视4个研究室，有研究人员29名。
