变质作用是指岩石在基本保持固态条件下由于温度（T）和压力（P）的改变，发生矿物转变的地质过程。变质作用发生的PT条件和经历的P–T轨迹一般反映了当时的构造环境和动力学过程。早在板块构造理论提出之前，变质岩石学家已经在探索变质作用与构造环境的关系。
