北京时间2010年11月25日消息，天文学上精确测定恒星和星系的距离长期以来一直是让天文学家们困扰的难题，除去三角视差等经典方法，有一类特殊的天体，为天文学家提供了一个“量天尺”。这就是造父变星(Cepheid Variable)。和太阳不同，造父变星会按照一定的周期规律性地变亮再变暗，周期从几天到几个月不等。这是因为它的大气温度会产生有规律的冷热变化，因而导致整个恒星体有规律地膨胀或收缩。
北京时间2010年6月25日消息，据国外媒体报道，天文学家已经在另一个太阳系观测到一颗行星上发生的强大“超级风暴”。他们发现，这颗行星上的风速超过每小时6200英里(9977.93公里/时)，它围绕一颗距离地球大约有150光年的像太阳的恒星运行。
