这里的“榴莲”不是指木棉科榴莲属的榴莲，而是番荔枝科番荔枝属热带果树。红毛榴莲原产热带美洲，是世界五大名果之一(另有芒果、香蕉、菠萝、柑桔)。每年5～6月开花，8～9月果熟。果肉乳白色，有独特的香气，果肉含20%的果糖和丰富的维生素C，主要鲜食，也是酿酒和制清凉饮料的好原料。根、叶、种子及未熟果全可做药，有杀虫、强心和伤口消毒等效用。种子可作杀虫剂，也可制化妆品。
