形态特征：二年生草本，茎直立，多单生，高5-60厘米，绿色或紫色，被较密而开展的硬长毛。基部叶密集，倒披针形，顶端钝或尖，全缘或极少具1至数个小尖齿，中上部叶披针形，急尖。头状花序多数，在茎枝端排列成圆锥花序，总苞半球形，苞片3层，雌花的外轮小花舌状，浅紫红色，内层细管状，无色，两性花管状，黄色。瘦果长圆披针形，长约1.8毫米，宽0.4毫米。花果期7-10月。

形态特征：落叶乔木，高达15-20米，树皮粗糙，常纵裂，灰色，稀深灰色或灰褐色，小枝灰色。冬芽近于球形，叶纸质，掌状分裂，裂片较宽，先端尾状锐尖，叶基常心形。顶生圆锥状伞房花序，萼片5片，黄绿色，椭圆形花瓣5片，淡白色；花药黄色。翅果嫩时紫绿色，成熟时淡黄色，小坚果压扁状。花期5月，果9月成熟，秋叶变亮黄色。
